The open space on yours has a 'door' missing, where the 'pottie' was stored. More than likely, yours had a towel rack which is also missing on yours, where the towel and washcloth hung. The top of the commode was made to hold a pitcher and bowl, for 'washing', before indoor bathtubs.

I have a commode very similar to yours. My door was missing, and someone had made one, which was just a solid piece of wood, which warped. We found an older gentleman who made us a new door like the old one should have looked, and it looks fantastic now. I have a small microwave on top of mine, in the laundry area in my basement, wherer plastic forks, paper plates, cups and napkins are stored for when the quilting girls come over.

I just thought I would pass on a bit of history for you in case you didn't know.

Here is a website link so you can see what it probably looked like originally. Mine looks almost identical to this one.

http://www.redbarnma.com/commode1.htm

Blessings,
MichelleMichellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11994575359990994574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6898473473537802812.post-73537557452533337402009-01-02T19:40:00.000-08:002009-01-02T19:40:00.000-08:00Hi Alaura...what a pretty name! Poor Mr. Snowman...he is a brave fellow refusing to fess up who did that! :-) I like where you moved the darling chest...looks good there. I have my trees put away and most of the decorations put up. Still have a lot more to store...it looks like a disaster area in my bonus room right now where it's all on the floor waiting to be put up in the storage area of the eves. Thanks for the wonderful comments and visits...I am always so delighted when I see your name because I know you are going to make me smile. :-) Happy, Happy New Year to you and your family!Susan (Between Naps On The Porch.net)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09655622740971576915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6898473473537802812.post-32165337307863788762009-01-02T17:45:00.000-08:002009-01-02T17:45:00.000-08:00Hi Alaura!
